Synthetic Roofs as it pertains to steep-slope roofing materials refers to manufactured products that replicate asphalt shingles, concrete tile, metal panels, slate, wood shakes and wood shingles. Advantage-30 is designed to be used over a roof deck as a water-resistant roofing underlayment beneath asphalt roofing shingles, wood shingles and shakes, metal shingles and metal panels, concrete tiles or slate. On a scale comparing costs of conventional roofing materials, the initial cost of installing synthetic slate shingles falls in the middle—it's more expensive than asphalt and architectural shingles and less expensive than clay tile and authentic slate.

With that in mind, the total projected cost of composite roofing installed would be about one third to one half the price of installing natural slate, and roughly twice the cost of installing asphalt shingles. Polymer-based or plastic roofing products are generally about the same weight as laminated asphalt roof shingles, therefore lighter than cement-based shingles, clay roof tiles, or slate roofs.

Transportation and installation of synthetic slate shingles is easier and less expensive than other roofing materials. For synthetic composite shingles, shakes, tiles and slates, a fair price range is $5.50 to $9.50 per sq. ft. installed. One of the best new roofing solutions on the market is synthetic roofing, a composite made from recycled materials that lasts much longer than other slate, shingle and Spanish tile roofs.

Plastic roofing shingles, tiles, slates, or "wood" shingles are manufactured using polymer-based or composite materials that may offer improved impact resistance (such as resistance to hail damage). Asphalt-saturated felts have been and are still common place in steep-slope roofing systems because they are low-cost, readily available materials with which most people are familiar. According to the Roofing Industry Educational Institute and the National Roofing Contractors Association, “since these products have been around for so long, and people have become accustomed to their ease of installation and workability, they remain relatively steadfast in the marketplace.”
